Pensions – A tax efficient investment

For every £100 paid into a pension by a basic rate taxpayer, the government pays in £25, making the total contribution £125. The limit on tax relievable contributions is currently set at £40,000 per year or 100% of your salary (whichever is lower).

If you are a non-earner or earn less than £3,600 annually, you can contribute up to £2,880 net to your pension, so that once tax relief is added your total annual contribution is £3,600.

If you’re a higher rate taxpayer you can claim a further tax relief top-up through your tax return.

If you die before the age of 75, your pension can usually be passed on as a lump sum without inheritance tax.

We help you to:

  • start contributing as soon as you can to give your pension fund lots of time to grow
  • work out how much you can afford to pay in.
  • understand what the rules are when it come to the maximum permitted contribution amounts
  • ensure you contribute in such a way so as to get the best tax relief
  • choose to invest your pension in funds that are appropriate for your level of risk and give your pension the best chance of growth
  • choose a provider and plan that gives you all the right options at a reasonable cost
  • regularly review your pension to make sure it continues to perform
  • know when you can reasonably expect to be able to afford to retire
  • fully understand all your options at retirement and take your pension in a way that suits your circumstances and is tax-efficient

Risk warning.

As always with investments, with a pension, your capital is at risk. The value of your investment can go down as well as up, and you may get back less than you invest. This information should not be regarded as financial advice.
